The government should think again before allowing the BAE shipyard at Portsmouth to close down, says the City's MEP Nigel Farage.
The defence giant have brought in management consultants LEK consulting to review the future of shipbuilding and ship maintenance.
The UKIP Leader, whose party is against the defence cuts which have seen troop numbers' slashed and the country left without an Aircraft Carrier for almost a decade, has warned that leaving England with no ship building would be "not only a tragedy for the City but deeply negligent for the country."
"With the referendum on Scottish Independence occurring in a few years the Government should really consider whether it wants the UK's ship building to take place entirely in Scotland" he said.
"Aside from the scandal of ending 800 years of proud shipbuilding here in Portsmouth, for an Island nation we need to have a working shipyard here in England.
"With the current attitude to defence it's no wonder that BAE make more money in America than they do here in the UK.
"BAE holds the contract for the Type 45 destroyer which is being build both here in Portsmouth and in Glasgow. It would be crazy for work on this to move entirely to Scotland.
"With the Type 26 Frigate popular with Arab States and the initial order of Type 45 Destroyers being cut a few years ago, the Government should think again about it's lax approach to our manufacturing and defence industries."
