Christopher Tappin US-UK Treaty
25th. February 2012Dear Home Secretary,
Christopher Tappin
Christopher Tappin has now, to our considerable shame and discredit, been removed by United States officials from the United Kingdom.
All will have noted the dignity and courage that he showed in the face of grave adversity.
Notwithstanding his surrender, Her Majesty’s Government retains a clear duty to afford him as much protection and assistance as it can in the circumstances.
It is open to you to urge the United States Justice Department to withdraw any objections to bail for Mr. Tappin that it may have when his application for bail is heard next week.
The case for you doing so forthwith is, I suggest, unassailable.
He cannot by any stretch of the imagination be considered as being likely to flee.
His wife, to whom he is devoted, is in poor health.
He would abide by any sensible and reasonable conditions that might be imposed.
There is no other factor in the case which demands that he should be kept in jail pending his trial.
I therefore urge you to contact the United States Justice Department forthwith and strongly urge it to withdraw any objections they may have to bail being granted, with conditions if necessary.
Yours sincerely
Nigel Farage
I have known Christopher Tappin for 40 years and am, along with so many people up and down the country, appalled with the way he has been treated by the British Government. As Mr Tappin said to reporters at Heathrow Airport as he prepared to board the plane following a two year fight against extradition, he put his trust in David Cameron and the Conservatives and he has been utterly let down. "With the extradition law as it stands the American authorities can whisk you over the Atlantic with no prima facie evidence. You have to prove your innocence, they don’t have to prove your guilt." You can now sign a petition on the government website: In the light of the Chris Tappin case, demands that David Cameron debates the US-UK extradition treaty with President Obama, with a view to amending it As of Monday, 5th March, Mr Tappin has been denied bail.
